Why Join Me?

Why on earth should someone join MY organization? This is a complex question, with an equally complex answer, and I was initially hesitant to put it on my site since I do not like to blow my own horn. But I do get asked the question from time to time, so here are my answers.

1. Leadership Skills.

This is a strong personal trait, and in retrospect it has been evident since childhood. I believe in servant leadership, though. In other words, I prefer not to ‘run the show’, but to help people grow, develop and achieve their objectives as long as their goals are congruent with mine or that of the organization to which we belong.

As a child I usually ended up as the ‘class captain’, even at primary school. I was:

-  The ‘Dux scholar’ (most outstanding overall performer) in standard 5 (year 7) at Primary School 1962
-  A team leader in the ‘Voortrekkers’ (equivalent of the Boy Scouts) in years 8, 9, 10 and 11 (1963-1966) at High School
-  A Prefect in years 10, 11 and 12 (1965-1967) at High School
-  A Cadet officer years 10, 11, and 12 (1965-1967) at High School
-  A Junior Officer (1st Lieutenant) in the army during my years of National Service (South African Signals Corps) 1973-1974
-  A Division Head at SA Atomic Energy Corporation 1983-1989
-  Head of the Electrical Engineering Department at Eastern Cape Technikon (now  Walter Sisulu University) 1993-1998
-  Chairperson of the Staff Association, and later Chairperson of the local Union branch at Eastern Cape Technikon
-  Member of the Governing Council at Eastern Cape Technikon 1997-1999.
-  President of local Lions International chapter (Komga) 1998.

2. Focus.

Marketing is my business, not my hobby. I am in this for the long run, having formally switched my career from Engineering to Marketing. I have gone as far as allowing my Professional Registration as Engineer to lapse. I am running my own marketing consultancy (Visionary Marketers, Australian Business Number ABN 54 060 938 478).

-   I have an MBA (University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business) with majors in Finance and Marketing.
-   In terms of Internet marketing I am focusing on Pay-Per-Click, Video Marketing and Article Marketing, although I use most of the other marketing avenues in order to stay current.

3. Tutoring skills. Trainer with worldwide reputation.

I love to train and coach; in groups and one-on-one. For the past 18 years my life has been revolving around that, first at Tertiary level, then within the Process Control/Process Automation industry (Industrial Data Communications, Project Management and Financial Management), and now within the Marketing arena.

My Engineering clients include the New York Stock Exchange (yes, Wall street) and the Indonesian Government (Department of Higher Education). I have performed training assignments in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Botswana, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Trinidad, China, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia and Singapore.
